WP3 deals with the development of a the model chain that will be used for the production of the European wind atlas database. The models will be designed and optimized throughout the project by continuous benchmarking using validation data compiled in WP2.
The NEWA Model-Chain Concept Statement is published in order to inform about the objectives, approach and expected features of the modeling framework that will be used to produce the New EW Wind Atlas and associated wind assessment tools.

The main objectives are:
- Development of advanced multi-scale wind assessment methodologies to improve spatial planning and wind farm design tools.
- Development of advanced wind power forecasting models from day-ahead to seasonal and decadal prediction horizons to improve operational wind power management systems.

Development of an open-source model chain platform to interconnect models working at different scales and fidelity levels.
- Establish a framework for collaborative model development, benchmarking and uncertainty quantification.
A probabilistic wind atlas methodology will be developed based on ensemble simulations from mesoscale models. Microscale models will be developed to downscale this probabilistic database and account for model-chain uncertainties in wind farm design tools.
The model-chain will be implemented in an open-source platform with the capability of interfacing models with different fidelities and licensing options under the same analysis and optimization framework. The platform will be installed in the PRACE European high-performance-computing network. This will allow not only to produce the European wind atlas database but also to create a hub for future research on wind energy flow models.
The model chain will be validated extensively making use of NEWA experiments and external data contributions from industry and met offices. Benchmarking activities will be opened to international participation through the IEA Task 31 Wakebench forum.
